What Is The Difference Between Genuine, Lab Grown Diamonds, And Cubic Zirconia?

A new trend in jewellers has been in circulation: lab grown diamonds. The lab grown diamond is titled based on how it is created. Bear in mind that it is still a diamond, made up of the same chemical composition a mined diamond is made of. Mined diamonds are made of carbon, and so are lab-grown diamonds. However, cubic zirconia is made of no carbon at all; it uses a compound called ZrO2.

There are many reasons someone may prefer a lab-grown or cubic zorconia piece of jewellery, and vice versa. While being cheaper and environmentally friendly, both types of "simulated diamond" are still, as stated, simulated and not genuine diamond. Something that is not stated usually by jewellers that primarily sell lab-grown diamonds is the fact that prices are not always reliable. The prices will fluctuate in today's market, as the practice of growing and simulating diamonds is a fairly new practice. 

Spotting lab-grown diamonds is virtually impossible for someone not in the industry. By appearance and feel, there is no difference. While real diamonds are created naturally in the earth over billions of years, lab-grown diamonds are, as mentioned, created in a laboratory over a few weeks by scientists. Those who have no problem with artificially created diamonds will have no issue with this, and will enjoy the benefits. Those who prefer genuine diamonds will be rest assured that they have a diamond that was mined, much like the majority of diamond jewellery on the market today.
To spot the difference between the two diamonds, a geologist using specialised equipment would need to check the stone or a professional with magnification equipment. Jewellers must inform customers on whether a diamond is lab-grown or not, and will be included in the certification.

Cubic zirconia are also created in a lab. The difference is, cubic zirconia is NOT a diamond. They're created by melting zirconium oxide powder, removed from heat after crystals have formed, then cut and polished into a diamond shape. There is a significant reduction in price when dealing with cubic zirconia, but reselling will never be as prosperous.
When viewing a cubic zirconia stone under natural light. The reflection of light you get will be rainbow coloured, while genuine diamonds will have more white light illuminating from them. 

Genuine or Simulated - Which Should I Pick? 

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing the right stone for you is market value. If a lab-grown or cubic zirconia stone is resold, the value of the item will be significantly less than a genuine diamond. As stated, the pricing fluctuates more for simulated diamonds, so when purchasing, it is difficult to predict whether the market value for your piece of jewellery will be high or low.
The last thing on anyone's mind will be how much it sells for. However, purchasing a diamond should be valuable. You don't want to purchase something that is a cheap item on the market. Genuine diamonds hold a lot of that intrinsic value. 
If you are okay with a simulated diamond that is not created naturally in the earth, then there are less downsides when picking a diamond piece out. There will always be pros and cons when choosing a diamond, so be sure to ask your recommended jewellers questions on your purchases.
